    Description

"Tuusula" is a 9 3/4" ethnic doll with a plaster-type composition shoulder head (resembling porcelain) that is attached to a firmly stuffed cloth body with floppy shoulders and thighs.  She was handcrafted in Finland circa the 1930s-on by
    Martta Nukketeollisuus in Turku
.  Martta's company produced traditional Finnish folk dolls from 1908 into the 1970s.  Originally Martta's dolls, except for their heads, were handmade and expertly costumed by Finnish housewives to help them earn income.  Later, during the 1930s, the dolls' shoulder heads were finally manufactured in Finland.  "Tuusula" is tagged with the paper "Martha Martta" paper medallion.
She is a lovely doll with one stroke brown brows, blue eyes detailed with upper liner, a well molded nose, rosy cheeks and a red close mouth.  Her long blonde mohair braids are tied with red ribbons.  She
is dressed authentically in the costuming of the "Tuusula" province in Finland.  She sustains light soil, discoloration (more notably the costume's white portions), and dust from age and storage.  Missing is her ribbon head piece or hat.  In traditional Finnish costuming, wearing ribbons signified an unmarried woman, whereas wearing a cap denoted a married woman.  She smells gently of cellar scent.  In her detailed costuming, "Tuusula" remains a lovely tribute to an earlier culture that is fast fading. She is tagged with the Kimport label indicating that she was sold through the Kimport catalogs.
