This Technics is one of my favorite. I have refurbed and sold over 12 of them within the past 2 yrs.Their design is impeccable, a fully automatic quartz direct drive that operates silently and is inaudible in the path. There are 3 circuit boards in it and a small chassis which holds a 2nd motor which control all arm functions: Start/Stop and Cue up/down. This motor was flushed out and upper/lower bearings lubricated. It now runs silently without purr. Also there is a timer circuit which actuates return at end of play. Very few moving parts here but lots of electronics which require calibration. When it’s out of cal. you get a flashing red light and it doesn’t work.
These were in production between ‘89-‘99, which seems insane by consumer audio mfg standards: But there wasn’t any demand for record players since the production of records had already died. Technics/Panasonic needed them cheap so instead of using Panasonic electrolytic capacitors, they used a cheaper brand when they could: I replaced All (15) caps.
They are the easiest of all to work, just open the cover, place the record on the platter and close the cover: Press ‘Start’. At the end the arm returns and the player goes idle. All controls are located outside the cover. No speed controls required, it has a quartz oscillator built- in to keep it accurate but has a strobe light for visual verification.
It’s arm is one of their best; 4-pt gimbal mounted into a zinc base for vibration isolation. Its low mass using the set it and forget it P-Mount cartridge format. Just pre set for 1.25 gr. and that’s it (Anti-Skate pre-calibrated).
The cartridge is brand new and I like the way it sounds in this arm. It’s .4x.7 mil elliptical stylus will bring out the best in your older records; it tracks on the upper, unused section of the groove -vs conical a stylus which tracks deeper along with old noisy dirt.
The Dustcover and hinges are also in VG Cond.
All in all, it will probably last another 40 yrs.
As with all electronics sold on EBay, this turntable is unconditionally guaranteed to exceed your expectations or your money back! Please check my feedback.
